How to Be Creative at Any Age: The Midlife Artist:

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I wish I had started painting years ago,” or “It’s too late for me to write a book now”? If so, you’re not alone—and you’re exactly where many a midlife artist begins.
So many of us middle-aged creatives carry the weight of our dreams being deferred! Our talents have been long-buried under our careers, caregiving, and life’s detours.
Not only is it possible to be a midlife artist, writer, photographer, musician, etc. —it’s necessary and within reach.

The Myth of the Young Prodigy
We’ve all heard the stories of child geniuses who started painting at 5 and were selling their work by 9. These little ones are plastered all over Facebook, YouTube and Instagram!
But these stories are the exception – not the norm.
Most of us don’t follow a straight path. As a midlife artist, we actually began making art or following their creative longings years ago, and then life happened.
One day (often after we’ve raised families, built our careers, or faced devastating losses), we realize something is missing, and our creativity is exactly what is needed to truly light us up again.
Art is not just about skill. It’s about knowing a life’s perspective, depth, and expression—and these grow with age.
A Midlife Artist Brings Unique Gifts to the Table
As a midlife artist, you bring life experiences to the table.
You’ve overcome incredible things during your many days on this earth, and you’ve developed huge amounts of resilience, wisdom, and sensitivity.
All of it shows up in your work—even if your words are muddled or your brushstrokes are wobbly at first.
At this stage of life, you’re not just painting a bowl of fruit – you’re painting a lifetime of meaning.
And that’s something a 20-year-old simply can’t replicate.
But What If I’m Not “Good Enough?”
Who says you aren’t you good enough??!!
If the voice in your head says, “You’re not real,” or “You missed your chance,” know that it’s just fear talking!
In fact, there’s a name for this annoying voice, and it’s called “Imposter Syndrome.”
And every single creator out there goes through it at some point.
You don’t have to sell your work to a publisher, sing on a stage, or be in a gallery to be an artist. You become an artist the moment you pick up your tools and choose to create anyway.
And the more you do it, the more you’ll grow. I promise.
Inspirational Stories
There are many artists who “made it big” later in life, including:
- Grandma Moses who started painting in her 70s and became world-famous in her 80s.
- Bill Traylor, a former enslaved person, began drawing in his 80s on scraps of cardboard—and his work now hangs in major museums.
- Laura Ingalls Wilder and James A. Michener started their successful writing careers later in life.
So, pick up a pen or a brush today! You don’t need anyone’s permission, and you don’t have to have a perfect plan in place.
Just do it.
